Pitcher Wins Above Replacement

It is here.

For pitchers who pitched during the Retrosheet era. Thanks to Tom Tango of Insidethebook.com for providing win expectancy charts for calculating leverage index.

Starters and relievers are compared to different replacement levels. Replacement level considers ballpark, league, defensive support, and mix of opponents. Pitchers get partial credit for the situation leverage they pitch in. Click on the Stat Definition link from any player to see what goes into these pages.

And like the hitters, I have a top 300 list for the pitchers.

Major thanks for cementing Baseball Projection's spot as the third most indispensable baseball site on the web.

So how do you justify leaving Blyleven off your ballot now? Somebody needs to forward the Top 300 to the BBWAA post haste...

Bert Blyleven deserves to be in the Hall for his curveball alone.

He was quite simply one of the greatest pitchers to ever pitch, and these numbers don't even reflect his excellent postseason record, where he contributed to two world championship teams.

Take Curt Schilling (a deserving future HOF in my opinion), add 70 wins, and you've got Blyleven.

Sure, Blyleven in the Hall of Fame. Sounds good to me. But your comment on Schilling is more interesting since he just retired and there has already been some debate on his "Hall of Famer-ness". So, if you support Schilling, do you also support Pettitte if he were to retire right now? And if so, what about Doc Gooden? Or maybe David Cone? All excellent pitchers on teams that they led to the promiseland. And while Doc wasn't great in the postseason like the others, his overall record was pretty impressive and his best seasons were better than anything the others put up. However, if your advocating Schilling simply based on his middle name alone...in that case nevermind, I cede the point.
