Minor league Defensive Ratings
Recently Jeff Sackmann of Minor League Splits have teamed up to create minor league defensive ratings for all players from 2005-2008. Jeff provided the data, and I applied the TotalZone calculations. Here's Sean Rodriguez, who has not only been a pretty good defender, he shows ability at several positions.
I'm hoping at some point to have defensive player pages here as well, and at some point, defensive projections for minor leaguers.

So, just out of curiosity, what's the baseline? League average? MLB average? All-of-baseball average?
When Dan Fox published similar numbers a few years back with SFR, he seemed to use average within each league as the baseline. The problem there is that lower level fielders didn't seem to be as good as upper level (AA and AAA) fielders, particularly at key defensive positions.

This is what I'm wondering, too. Would it be easier for, say, a player in low-A post a higher score because the talent level is lower?
These numbers are all relative to the league played in. I am working on cross level translations, fielding MLE's. So far, it appears that the infielders lose a few runs at every level jump, but outfielders do not.
In fact, from the data it appears outfielders might even be better in the minors than the majors. That probably says something about the value of young legs.

That matches what I was informally finding with Fox's data. Lower-level SS's looked better than their scouting reports suggested, while higher-level SS's looked about right (or worse...but hey, it's the Reds, so that's probably accurate).
