Executive of the Day: Tony Reagins

Congratulations Tony, on being named American League executive of the year by the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.

Obviously he's not the only person responsible, as most of the team was already in place when Tony took over, but 100 wins is a damn good start for a rookie GM.

To further the Hall of Fame debate, often we look at who is in and who is out and debate why. I also like to look at who gets votes, who does not and then ask why. In recently years, Lou Whitaker is an excellent example of what I am talking about. I am not debating whether Whitaker should be in the Hall or not (though I do think he should). I am saying, his not receiving even 5% of the vote to remain on the ballot is a travesty.
Another version of this debate that I want to bring up is David Cone. Now, I do not advocate Cone's inclusion in the Hall. Though if he were in, he wouldn't be the worst pitcher in. But when you think about all the people out there advocating Jack Morris and see him getting 44% of the vote this year, I ask what's the difference between him and David Cone?
Certainly there are the Wins. Morris' greatest argument. Wins. 254 of them and the most wins of anyone in the 80's. There is also the World Championships, especially the 10 inning CG against the Braves in '91. For Cone, he only won 194 games. But, his winning percentage is better (.606 vs .577) and Cone was 12-3 in the postseason including 5-0 in the World Series and more championships.
On top of all of that Cone also Struckout more in about 1,000 less innings. Cone also posted a better ERA. Now I will grant as much as Cone had a reputation as a horse with all of his games throwing 120+ pitches, Morris did complete a ton more games and was probably one of the most durable pitchers of his era. But Cone did manage to win a Cy Young while Morris did not. They were both 5 time All Stars. Morris had 3 20 Win seasons to Cone's 2.
Now again, I am not saying all of this makes a compelling argument for Cone to make the Hall. I am saying it just shows how inane it is that Morris gets 44% of the vote and Cone couldn't even muster 4%. The overall value of their careers was not separated by that much. One could argue that Morris was more valuable. Just like one could argue that Trammell was more valuable than Whitaker. But for Cone and Whitaker to appear on the ballot the same number of times as Dan Pleasac and Terry Steinbach is a tad ridiculous.

I agree 100%. Not that I'm sure Cone should be be in, but it makes no sense for him to be cast aside so quickly while Morris gets years of serious consideration.

If Morris went in though, it wouldn't bother me as much as Rice. Morris is pretty much the Jim Rice of pitchers. Severely overrated by the media, a fine player but not really close to being the best player at his position who is outside the Hall.

The difference though, is Morris has some legitimate postseason performances to point to. He's directly responsible for the difference between getting to the WS and getting a ring for the 91 Twins. Rice, on the other hand, has no rings and his overall playoff record is poor.

VERY clever, I would never have thought of re-creating spaghetti-0's, but I'll bet the grandkids will love them.
