Player of the Day: Adam Dunn

There aren't many real hitters left on my free agents page. There are three hitters left who project to at least 10 runs above average per 150 games and have a snowball's chance in hell of actually playing in 2009. There's Manny Ramirez, who's probably going to eventually go back to the Dodgers, Adam Dunn, and Bobby Abreu.

I'd like to see Dunn sign with the Angels. The Angels don't look like they have much of an offense in 2009. They'll start the season and immediately wish they had that "big bat behind Vlad". Well, there have been plenty of big bats out there this offseason, and some are going pretty cheap. The Angels have an opening at either DH, 1B, or LF, the easiest spots to hide a lumbering power hitter. Signing a bat would not even block Juan Rivera or Kendry Morales. Get a 1B, Kendry plays DH. Get a DH, Kendry plays first. If Vlad needs to DH, Kendry plays OF instead and the new slugger plays first. Get a LF, Rivera plays right and Vlad gets to DH. It's easy. Angels also have no lefty bat on the roster. Perfect opportunity to sign Dunn. What are they waiting for? Sign him now, and you don't have to give up anyone in a trade later.

Alternatively, I'd like to see Dunn sign with the Orioles. They need a first baseman, and it would be fun to see him take shots at the warehouse next summer.

I agree 100%. Dunn's particular skill set (power and patience) would be a welcome addition. I'm guessing the Angels front office is waiting out the market in the hopes of grabbing either Dunn or Abreu at a reduced price.

Or Bonds. I know, I know. I am a broken record. :)

Tony Reagins has denied that the Angels are pursuing any of these players. All I can hope is that it's a negotiating tactic.

Between the corner OF, 1B, and DH the Angels have Vlad, Juan Rivera, and Kendry Morales. If they sign nobody, who fills the 4th spot?

Figgins? With Wood playing 3rd?

Matthews? Not sure when he'll even be healthy enough to play, not to mention he can't hit.

Robb Quinlan? Matt Brown?

Reggie Willits? Sacrifice power and go with defense, speed, and walks?

I honestly don't know.

Um, why not Bobby Abreu instead of Dunn?

He'll only hit about 1/2 as many HR's, but the guy isn't awful defensively. He won a Gold Glove in 05' and still has a plus-arm.

Abreu will also walk at a similar rate to Dunn, and once he's on base he'll be a greater stolen base threat than anyone but Figgins (seriously, check out the numbers).

Also, Abreu brings the added benefit of not striking out 150+ times in a season. And any smart Angels fan knows that putting the ball in play works perfectly into the Angels "steal the base or move the runner" philosophy.

My season seats are in RF, exactly where Dunn could be depositing nightly, but I would still rather see Abreu and his .300/20/100/20 in Halo red.

I'll give you a buck if Abreau hits those benchmarks this year. His defense is better than Dunn's only because Dunn is a clod. But Abreau is well past even being an average defensive player. I'm not saying Abreau is terrible, but what the Halos need is the big bat in that lineup.

I agree, I hope this nonchalance is a negotiating tactic - I just can't believe the Angels don't recognize just how unproductive, (frequently "pathetic") the offense has been the last several years, and particularly, in the playoffs.

And, similarly, I can't believe they don't see how much a guy like Dunn can help our often anemic offense. Sure, we all want an Albert Pujols or the next Ted Williams, but that's not gonna happen, so let's be smart, like the Rays were in signing Burrell, and improve ourselves where we can, when we can.

We can get Dunn for nothing but cash, no comp picks, nothing. And no iffy trades at the trading deadline, either, where teams want us to empty our farm system for some 3-month rent-a-player with bad knees.

If he'll DH for us, I can't see any downside to this - just do it, Tony.

I'd be fine with Abreu. At age 35, I don't expect him to hit like he has for the last decade and his defense is not good.

But he should be good for triple crown numbers that look like the last 5 from Garret Anderson, with the addition of a ton of walks and a .375 OBP. And yeah, he'll steal a few bases too.
